Leaving promptly at 11am, the procession took off, capably escorted by Lee County Sheriff’s Department motors and patrol cars. Half way through the 21 mile route the sky turned dark and it began to shower. No matter, the leather clad bunnies brought their toys, boxed games and arts/crafts supplies to the ambulatory patients waiting for them under the alcove entrance to the hospital. Lee Memorial Health System President Jim Nathan served as this year’s Honorary Grand Marshal and was very moved by the outpouring of generosity from the motorcycling community. Jim noted that the toys the bikers bring will keep all the toy chests on all the children’s wards in the hospital stocked for the year.
Following some refreshments and a very brief speech, the children that were able were again brought outside to sit on some motorcycles, honk the horns and have their pictures taken. Lots and lots of smiles were observed.
Last stop for the day was Jimmy’s Pink Cadillac Café which hosted a free pig roast and entertainment. Owners Jimmy and Arlene Orosino dished up some mighty fine pull pork, cabbage and baked beans for everyone.
As the event ended and the rain became heavier, groups of riders headed home to make preparations for their own Easter celebration content in the knowledge the children stuck in the hospital will at least have an Easter holiday to remember.
